The Story of Pelican Prints
Members of The Pelican Project have launched a permanent exhibition space and shop in central Exeter, showcasing original printed works created by artists from the SEND community using a wheelchair-powered printing press they designed themselves.
The press- developed by Pelican members in collaboration with Positive Light Projects- is the world’s first of its kind. It enables artists with a wide range of physical access needs to independently generate, print and sell original work, placing authorship, ownership and innovation at the heart of the creative process.
The works begin as ideas generated by Pelican members- phrases, statements and provocations- and are printed on site. All proceeds from sales are reinvested directly into supporting the artists and sustaining the programme.
“This press changed everything,” says The Pelican Project. “It represents the original ideas and unique power of our members. It shows what happens when a community listens.”
The project challenges traditional narratives around inclusion in the arts, shifting away from charity-based models towards visibility, agency and shaping culture. At The Pelican Project, members join not as participants, but as drivers of change; Pelican Prints epitomises this principle.
Not charity: Culture.
