Pelican Portraits 2022

It’s time for our second annual Pelican Portraits project, in collaboration with Positive Light Projects! Pelican Portraits is all about celebrating the Pelican family and letting the world know who we are through portraits of each of us. Check out last year’s collection:

This year, we will be working with Lene, a photographer based at Positive Light Projects, and Pelican’s own visual art lead, George. Unlike last year, when we were the only subjects in our photos, this year we will sit for our portraits with something that expresses who we are. This could be an item of clothing, an object, a picture or anything at all (that will fit in a photo!).

Alongside our portrait, Lene and George want to hear your answers to these questions:

  • What is your object/ item/ clothing and why is it important to you?

  • What do you love about Pelican Project?

  • Why is the Pelican Project important to you?

Lene and George will be taking our portraits during or just after your regular Pelican sessions. The sessions may run a little longer than usual and there will be a catch up session for anyone who misses their regular group that week.
Missed all the scheduled sessions? Don’t panic! We will make sure we get a portrait of everyone who wants one. The dates for photos will be as follows:

Monday 17th, Rhythm & Movement, during session (10:30-12)

Tuesday 18th, Freefall+, after the art session we will walk up to Positive Lights and have our photos taken (12:30-14:00)

Tuesday 18th, during session (17:00- 18:30)

Friday 21st, Indy Art Club, during session (2-4) pm, also “Pick- Up” session for anyone who missed their photo during the week.

We are also using the project to create a short film about Pelican. This will include some of us talking about Pelican and our portraits. The film will go on our social media and website. At the end of Pelican Portraits, you will be sent a digital copy of your portrait.

We hope your professional portrait is something you can treasure for years to come. If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of delivering this project, a voluntary £10 donation is welcome and can be made here:

Pelican Portraits 2021

The Pelican Project is working on a new collaboration with Printmaker George Barron and Photographer Brendan Barry at our new home, Positive Lights Projects.

With Brendan, we will create unique portraits that will be used on the new Pelican website, whilst George will show us how to use these portraits along with a range of printing processes, to create T-Shirts that you can wear to Pelican sessions, and posters which will be displayed at the Positive Light Projects launch exhibition.

We plan to make this a yearly event to show not only the diverse range within our membership, but also the diverse range of practices that we will engage with at Positive Light Projects.

Museum at Large with the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM)

Were really excited that our link with the museum (Exeter RAMM) is getting started again! This time, it is part of the ‘Museum at Large’ project which is aiming to take the museum and it’s collection to the streets of Exeter! Find out more here.

The artists working with the museum for this project want our help- they want to get ideas about important objects to us- we will take these objects along to a session and take a guided look at some of the collection and see what ideas come up.

If you enjoy art, history, the museum or just want to get involved in a wider community project, this is the one for you!

WHEN? Tuesday 5th October, 12.30pm - 2pm (after Freefall+)

Experimental Filmmaking

Thursday 16th September
10:30am - 12:30pm

This workshop uses the 16mm film strip as a canvas. Participants can explore the following techniques:

  • Placing (in)organic material directly onto the filmstrip to create moving image collages

  • Hand painting, scratching and / or drawing onto it

  • Combining multiple techniques to take the image to the edge of failure

In any case anyone can very quickly make highly personal and experimental films by hand. The workshop essentially reveals how to make the passing of time visible at 18 or 24 frames per second without camera technology. At all stages of the workshop participants can see their works as loops in progress.

The workshop also touches on the production of experimental optical sound by hand (images across the soundtrack area are reproduced by the projector as sounds). Instant musique concrete can be created.

This workshop uses clear and black (opaque) 16mm film leader as a potential canvas, enabling participants to make highly personal and experimental films by hand. Participants can scratch, drew, paint, collage, and salivate onto filmstrips using pens, inks, transfers, brushes, stampers, sandpaper - anything which can leave a mark can be used! This is a powerful, intuitive, fascinating and fulfilling of making experimental films with the minimum of means, and will be exploring the potential for the production of experimental soundtracks on the way!

All footage generated on this workshop will be digitised and made available to participants as a downloadable file.
